MediaTek get the Title of Biggest Smartphone Chipset Vendor in Q3 2020 for the first time

Meditek records the highest market share in Q3 2020, with a 31% market share. Mediatek has become the biggest Smartphone Chipset brand as MediaTek records its highest market share in the $100-$250 price band in key regions like China and India.

As per a report published in Counterpoint Research, Qualcomm was the biggest 5G chipset vendor in Q3 2020. As per the report, Qualcomm powered almost 39% of the 5G Smartphones sold worldwide.

Demand for 5G smartphones doubled in Q3 2020 - almost 17% of the smartphones sold in Q3 were 5G. with the ever-growing demand for the 5G smartphones this trend is expected to keep going, more so with Apple launching its 5G Line-up. As per the report one-third of the smartphones shipped in Q4 2020 are expected to be 5G.

We can clearly see from the above exhibits that the Share of MediaTek Chipsets has increased from 26% to 31%, leaving behind Qualcomm at 29% market share.

 

Addressing the improved performance of MediaTek, Research Director Dale Gai said, "MediaTek's strong market share gain in Q3 2020 happened because of three reasons - strong performance in the mid-end smartphone price segment ($100-$250) and emerging markets like LATAM and MEA, the US ban on Huawei and finally wins in leading OEMs like Samsung, Xiaomi, and Honor.

Xiaomi has increased the use of MediaTek chipsets more than three times since the same period the last year. MediaTek was also benefited from the US ban on Huawei.

Both Samsung and Qualcomm have lost some of their Market Share in Q3 2020 as compared to Q3 2019. Meanwhile, MediaTek has gained almost 11% increase in the Indian Region in Q3 2020. Mediatek has also gained its market share in other regions as well. 

As per the trends we have seen so far, it's highly possible that Qualcomm and MediaTek will continue to lead the Smartphone Chipset Industry.
